Procedure of LASIK Eye Surgery

There are three main steps to a LASIK procedure:

  • A mechanical surgical tool known as a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser is mainly used to create a thin, circular flap in the cornea. Then the surgeon folds back this hinged flap to access the underlying cornea which is also called the stroma.
  • Usually, an excimer laser is used to reshape the corneal stroma. This highly advanced laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to remove microscopic amounts of tissue from the cornea to reshape it so it more accurately focuses light on the retina for resolve the vision problem.
  • The corneal flap is laid back in place, where it adheres to the corneal stroma without use of stitches.

During the Procedure

LASIK surgery is a one of the short procedures that normally takes under 30 minutes.

Before surgery, the person will experience a thorough evaluation of the eyes to test for any infection, inflammation, or abnormal eye pressure. Then the surgeon will take complete measurements of the eye and cornea.

During the surgery, the person will be awake and may receive medication to relax them if they feel nervous.

Afterward, the person will lie back in a reclining chair, and the surgeon will place numbing drops into the eyes. In addition, they will use an instrument to hold the eyelids open.

A soft corneal suction ring will hold the eye in position, and this may cause dim vision to patient. With use a tiny blade, the eye surgeon will cut a hinged flap at the front of the cornea. The surgeon will then use a laser to remove precise amounts of tissue and remodel the cornea with the flap folded back.

As required, the laser uses a system to follow the eye’s position and redirect the laser’s pulses. Then the surgeon will carefully reposition the flap back into place over the cornea. Moreover, natural adhesion keeps the flap in place without the need for stitches.

The possible advantages of LASIK surgery may not justify the risks or complications. You have fairly good vision. If you see well enough to require contacts or glasses only part of the time, improvement from the surgery may not be worth the risks.

LASIK eye surgery is not painful or very little painful. Before surgery, your surgeon will place numbing eye drops into both of your eyes. While you may still feel a little bit of pressure during the procedure, you should not experience any pain.

The actual procedure generally takes less than 10 minutes per eye. Depending on your prescription, and the amount of correction required, the laser itself only takes 20-50 seconds to correct your vision.

LASIK surgery is permanent, with a few exceptions. There is a chance that the treatment and correction can regress, and the vision regresses slightly back to what it was before.
